Evaluation of Peer Support Pilot Program for Epilepsy Smart Australia

Background

Epilepsy is a medical condition that affects the brain and causes seizures. Around 65 million people in the world live with epilepsy, making it one of the most common neurological disorders.

Epilepsy Smart Australia is a national program that provides high-quality, evidence-based epilepsy services. They offer a range of services to people with epilepsy, their families, and carers, including:

  • Information and support

  • Education and training

  • Advocacy

  • Research

The program also works to raise awareness of epilepsy and to reduce the stigma associated with the condition.

Beacon Strategies was engaged by Epilepsy Smart Australia to assess the overall effectiveness of the Peer Support Program Pilot, identify if the program has achieved its intended goals, objectives and outcomes, understand if the program is meeting the needs of stakeholders and provide recommendations that inform future program planning decisions.

This project aligns with our vision of "a more impactful social purpose sector" as we are able to work alongside a passionate, mission-based organisation in understanding and improving the effectiveness of an innovative service model that helps people with epilepsy and reduces the stigma associated with it.

Approach

Our approach to undertaking the Evaluation of the Peer Support Pilot Program, will likely consist of the following steps:

Project Establishment 

Facilitate a Project kick off meeting to discuss the proposed approach, scope of work, project risks and governance 

Phase 1: Refine program logic

Review the supplied program logic model and meet with the ESAP Evaluation Committee to provide advice and  collaboratively finalise the program logic.

Phase 2: Refine Evaluation Framework

Review the supplied evaluation plan and meet with the ESAP Evaluation Committee to provide advice and collaboratively finalise the evaluation plan

Phase 3: Operationalise evaluation activities

Identify the details and develop all necessary supporting materials to carry out the evaluation (e.g. develop data collection protocols, surveys etc). 

Phase 4: Quarterly reporting

Quarterly meetings to discuss data compliance, monitor data indicators and provide advice regarding data collection process improvements.

Phase 5: Reporting

Collection of qualitative data (e.g. focus groups and interviews and development of a final evaluation report at the conclusion of project activities.
